There are several steps involved in becoming a REALTOR®. You might wish to start by reading an article by a past president of the CAAR Board of Directors, So You Want to Be a REALTOR®, an outline of "what it takes to make it in the industry."

    • Take the 60-hour pre-licensing course required by the Commonwealth of Virginia from an accredited school. Here at CAAR, this class is called "Principles of Real Estate" and is held 4 times a year.
    • After passing your pre-licensing course, schedule and pass the Virginia licensing exam.
    • Find a Broker with whom you wish to work and become one of his/her agents. You have one year from the date you passed your test to hang your license with a Broker, or you will have to re-take the state exam.
    • Join CAAR to become a REALTOR®!

You must have a high school diploma or GED, and must not have any felony convictions to become a licensed real estate agent.
